SDL Trados Studio 2009 is the new package from SDL Trados that provides all the tools you need to translate and edit translations. This is a quick guide designed to get you started using Trados Studio for the first time.
In Trados Studio, projects for translation will be sent to you in one file called a Project Package (.sdlppx file). This will include the file(s) for translation, the translation memory (if applicable), the termbase (if applicable) and any reference material relevant to the project.
How to Open a Project Package
- Select Open Package from the Standard toolbar in any view, or from the Home button, found in the left-hand navigation pane.
- Select the Project Package to be opened and click Open. The Open Package wizard opens on the Review Package Contents page.
- Click Finish to import the package. The Importing Package page is displayed.
- If this is the first package for this project that you have ever opened, the Browse For Folder dialog box is displayed. Select a folder in which you would like to store the contents of the package and click OK.
- When the import is complete, click Close to close the Open Package wizard. A project corresponding to the project details in the package has been created and opened in SDL Trados Studio.
How to Open a Project File for Translation
- Click the Files button in the navigation pane to display the Files view. This displays all files from the project package you have just opened.
- Double-click on the file that you wish to translate, or right click on the file and select Open for Translation from the menu. The file is automatically opens in the Editor view with the associated translation memories and termbases.
- If you need to re-open a file for translation (e.g. if the translation has not been completed in one day and needs to be opened again the following day), browse to the Projects tab and ensure that the relevant project is in bold. If it is not in bold, double-click on the relevant project. Navigate to the Files tab and double-click on the file to open. This will open the same file with the same associated translation memory and termbase. Important: Do NOT use the Open Document function as this will open and save a completely new project on your computer, with different project settings and no associated termbases or translation memories.
Important Note: Once a Project Package has been opened once, it must NOT be opened again. Opening a Project Package a second time will overwrite any translation that you have done.
How to QA Check Your Own Translation
Trados Studio comes with its own QA verification software called QA Checker 3. Projects will be sent to you with pre-defined QA checks as part of the Project Package. In order to verify your own translation, please follow the following steps:
- Open the file for translation in the Editor view.
- Translate each segment as normal. Verification is automatically performed on a segment when you confirm a translation.
- If there is an error in the translation, an icon will be displayed in the segment status column: : :
- To view the error, either put the cursor over the error symbol, or click Comments. This will display a list of all the errors in the file.
- Check whether any action needs to be taken to rectify the error. Once you are happy that the segment is correct, right-click on the segment and select Lock Segment, or press Ctrl + L. The error icon will now disappear.
- The QA Checker has certain limitations. Please also take care to ensure the following are correct:
- Decimal separators (e.g. 12,3 mm, or 12.3 mm)
- Please note that files that have not been QA checked will be sent back to be amended.
